Hey all,

Is there a sale in May in Red Deer? I went to one there last year, I think it was May 29th? I would like to plan on attending if there is one, this time with birds to sell! Smile

Thanks!
Amanda

I believe it is Mid June this year. Maybe something is up on the CHB site.

We could not afford the Red Deer Agcenter this year. We dont make any money putting these events on, and as there was no money left from the last two Red Deer events, we could not afford to do it there again. Our pockets are only so deep LOL!!! tongue

We are holding a sale June 16 at the Drill Hall in Wetaskiwin. We are hoping to raise enough funds to hire judges for the November show (Red Deer).

IF we can raise the funds we would be willing to have a Red Deer sale again!

Red Deer was a nice place to have a sale, but like any place there were some Pros and Cons.

Red Deer is expensive, we really have to work to get commercial booth to help cover costs. It is not really in an agricultural center, We have a to a load of expensive advertising to get the public coming in. The parking is free only if there is nothing else going on that weekend. We have to pay dearly for power.
But it is a great building, very centered provincially, just off the main highway, easy to find.

Wetskiwin is known, very poultry friendly, they love crafts, the building is inexpensive and easy to book and comes with power. It is not too far off Hwy 2, (it is on hwy 2A), in an agricultural area, and still in the main Edm Calg corridor area. But it is not as half way between Edm and Calgary as Red Deer, it is not as big as the westerner and there is less parking.

Any input from people would be greatly appreciated and definitely considered in future events!!!
Who knows, maybe we will be able to have a May Red Deer sale and a July Wetaskiwin sale!

I agree with you Artic, pockets only run so deep and you go to where you can afford. The Drill hall is still a nice place and will still give plenty of room for the sale. Just so much further for southern folk to travel which is my only complaint. Oh and the hotels don't have pools there, lol! , my children's complaint.

I think I prefer having the sale in Wetaskiwin rather than Red Deer. I could be wrong but I think the sale will do better in the drill hall.
Just my observation, but the sale in Red Deer last year, while there were lots of vedors and some vendors did well there, the hall looked empty because it is so big. Buyers have a perception. If a sales looks like there is a lot of unsed space, crowds may think there isn't much going on there and do a pass on it.
I think the drill hall can easily be filled without being crammed and should do better.

I REALLY like the June sale date to the May one. It may just be a couple of weeks difference BUT the weather likely will be better. It is also early enough that people will still be looking to buy hatching eggs, chicks and young birds.

It will be good to compare both location and see how the numbers add up.

Regardless, we are taking a booth in Wetaskiwin, so will see you all there.

Last years sale in Red Deer was pretty amazing seemed like everyone there would buy just about anything for any price. Sold out of chickens around lunch time and finished up the ducks not long after. And such a great place to have it where we could drive in to unload. I don't like the idea of the June date since it is right during my exam week so most likely this year I will not be attending.

I agree with Chantecler-eh?, this might be a hard time for a lot of people with kids getting so close to school end, would almost be better to wait till July when summer holidays start up!

I think July would be too late in the season. Most people tend to like to get new birds May/June.

I also just remembered too, there is a July sale slated for Glen Park, AB. I went to Glen Park last year. It's a small sale but it was packed and very busy.

Hope to see everyone at this Sale! The time and location of the sale is something the CHB board debate over and tried to pick the best choice. There are many other sales going on in Alberta in other months. The Westerner was not an option this year as the building rental was very high and that would have meant the booth prices would have been expensive.
