My husband, Doug, admired these at the Wetaskiwin show. I must say there was quite an assortment of lovely iridescent Indies there. I neglected to see who was showing them. Anybody know? Anyone else have this lovely breed? What can you tell me about them?

Hi Sue,

They are a Bantam Duck and are common and fairly easy to raise. They hatch much easier then the Call ducks and are 90% quieter. Sorry they only come in Black. Following are the breeders from the shows:

Eric Small 780-594-2406 marshasmall78@yahoo.ca
Allan Lakusta 780-645-4841 alakusta@mcsnet.ca
J & J Call Ducks 204-843-2246
Terry & Shauna Willoughby 780-968-1818 terry@tigerlily.ca

Oooohhh, I want!

As usual you are a wealth of information, Tara. I may be talking to you again soon. I envision a pond with a little fountain and a little duck house beside it.

Thanks a lot Sue! Rolling Eyes
I have always wanted ducks and thought the Indies were beautiful. Didn't know about the cool eggs. Sigh, Hubby says no every time I bring ducks up. If we were set up better I would just get some and he would never know.....did I say that out loud??? Oops. Laughing

East Indes ducks I saw at a local petting farm is what started me on the path to waterfowl craziness Laughing I went home to find out what those beautiful ducks were. I couldn't talk my hubby into bantam ducks since he wasn't impressed with my sons bantam chickens so found Cayugas which are just as beautiful but big ducks. I'm not usually one to pick black but they are so gorgeous in the sun and so calm and quiet I LOVE them! The cayugas lay black eggs at the beginning of the season as well and I'm patiently awaiting my first cayuga eggs of the year Very Happy I agree with Higgins though it is nearly impossible to capture the shine of them in photos and must be seen in person (in your own yard hehehe)
impossible to capture in pics but the shiny black bills and webbed feet are beautiful and all that thick black fluff Very Happy

OK, eggs now. Do they hatch well? Do they ship well? CAN ANYONE SEND ME SOME????? Baby duckings really do something to my heart! If I put them in a wading pool could I keep them at school? I wouldn't want to miss a moment of their cutesy duckieness! I could rationalize this action by claiming to share their cutieness with the kids. In reality it would all be about me! Oh, the rationalizations I think of!

My son hatched duck eggs in his Brinsea mini last year at school and they brooded for a week in a large fish tank so the kids could watch them. It worked out great and then as you can see in the duckling pic they were in a kiddie pool in my living room Embarassed I'd think the bantam ducklings would be easier to brood in school since they're a bit smaller. Ducklings are adorable and sweet but after the first week whew do they get messy and smelly hahaha Welcome to waterfowl insanity Twisted Evil
baby only couple hours old

livingroom duck brooder had to be changed at least daily Embarassed

This way worked FAR better! Momma duck was 3yrs old last year and she did a fantastic job raising her babies unfortunately i didn't get to love and cuddle them much Sad

Tara, you are encouraging the right person. I have raised chicks, turkeys, rabbits, snakelets and puppies in my class here in Warburg. In previous classes I have also given birth to guppies, mice, quail, tadpoles, salamander larva and sowbugs!

So now I shall ask you to put your money where your mouth is. Do you sell your eggs? I think we are close enough that I could come to get them.

Oh Tara, I know your policies very well. When I say 'put your money where your mouth is', I am calling you out to send me eggs after you have sung the virtues of raising ducklings in the class. And then you post pictures of baby ducklings? Oh, the cruelty. I will have you know I showed those pictures to my students and the oohs and aaahs could be heard on the other side of the school. When I told the children we couldn't have any, they cried! How COULD you!You must really hate children. Twisted Evil

I hereby take the official title of "Evil Woman" from Cynthia and bestow it upon YOU! Cynthia, you are in the clear.

(In all seriousness, Tara, I applaud your morals and hope you know I am teasing you unmercifully! Laughing )
