I received a call from the power company and there will be a planned power outage for us from 9 am to 3 pm on Tuesday - the day my eggs go into lockdown.

My options are:

1)wrap the incubator and hope it doesn't cool down too much (high of -10 not including wind chill forcast for that day)

2) take the incubator to my moms house Monday night and bring it back Tuesday night

3) bring it to work with me for the day Tuesday.

What would be the best option?

If you can't bring them anywhere fill hot water pop bottles and put them in with the wrapping and fill a thermos with hot water to replace the hot water in the pop bottle later.

okay that is cool ha ha take your chickie eggs to work lolol!

I would vote... take to moms house. just make sure mom didn't get the same planned outage notice.
At least you got notice, but gee, why why now?? :'(

Do you have a Power converter that you could plug into the car?
6 hours off is a long time
if not I would wrap the Incubator up real good and take to a place that has power
But if it is one of the Styrofoam Incubators a invertor plugged into the car would work and you can pick them up at Canadian Tire.
and yes 6 hours running the car is a long time also
if you can take to your moms or to work with out chilling them I think that will be the best

Leave it at your mom's until all the chicks hatch. She will love it, all those baby chicks!!! cheers

I think I'm going to pack it up and take it to Moms. However, she and I anre going to SK for the weekend and my hubby and son will be babysitting the hatching chicks so I do need to bring it back. I will just have to transport very carefully ( it is a styrofoam hovabator )

The eggs handled their travels well. It was a small test hatch and all but one hatched!

I got eggs to put in on the weekend, but waited till Monday night to put them in as we were to have another planned outage 12-3 Monday afternoon, but the outage never happened.

I had my chicks all set up with hand warmers and hot water bottles all for nothing!

that's awesome!, lol well at least you was prepared for another planned outage, I recall baked microwave potatoes keep a lot of heat , for chicks for a long time, but have to make sure no one can get cuddled right on them as they are very hot so lots paddling., but for non planned outages the spuds are out unless you have a gas stove, to bake them then again that takes forever to lol.
I am glad your hatch went well. Smile
Thanks for replying Smile

We had a bit of a curve ball yesterday. With no warning they cut the power again from 12-3. I had 2 an a half dozen eggs on day two in the incubator and of course the chicks. Good thing my daughter was home. She took the incubator to my moms and borrowed a hot water bottle for the chicks.

Hopefully there will be no ill effects. And on the bright side it looks like all the new power poles are up and running so no more outages.

You know it used to be when I had things at important stages our power used to go out so often(with out notice) I am no stranger to stuffing my shirt with newly hatched chicks until I got heat source. I think that idea of those heat packs(shake n use hotshots) have on hand should be in every ones emergency poultry kit.LOL.. Lets hope the power outages are done now for you!
