I cannot get these little ducks out of my mind!!
Every morning I hope to see an egg.. The beginning of another season of tiny little baby duck bums waddling around under the heat lamp. I can't wait to watch them mature and see what I get. To add to all that... Oh how I want to add pastel call ducks to the barn. Oh those lively little eyes and squishy little cheeks!!!
Cuteness overload!!!!

Does anyone have a variety they are really excited about working with? Something you've been working with or a new critter project?
I just love all the new life on the farm in spring.

I'm experimenting with meat ducks. I'll be raising Pekin/Muscovy , Cayuga , and muscovys. All with the same housing and feed. I'll be weighing them and checking carcass quality. Will see which bird wins.

I would be very interested to learn your results! I have often wondered which variety would do best. I didn't know Cayuga could be a meat variety, I thought just eggs, so I already learned something .

We are raising Silver Appleyards and are extremely pleased with growth rate and egg laying! They started laying at 19 weeks and we had 100% fertility at 6 months. Out of 6 duck hens, we have been averaging 5 eggs a day all winter long. We are using them for meat as well, and they were ready to process at 9 weeks.

I've ate all three but have never actually compared them so should be interesting. We picked keepers from last years cayugas based on meat and the Beetle sheen color. I'd like to get a few more breeds next year and do the same compare meat quality to each other.

I thought silver Appleyards were a bantam duck. I didn't know they were layers. I love this, I'm learning something new. Are they quite big?
Those Cyugas have beautiful colour. I imagine that when processing them that tackle shops would be interested in feathers for fly tying.
I also was wondering people's experience with pekin.. Is there a big difference with them and jumbo Pekin? Are there more complications because of weight gain?
Also what's peoples experience with Roen?

Oh my it is an addiction! Yes I am loving the Gold Laced Orpington project we have going here. Next up is Bantam Chocolate Orps, well maybe, if hubby can be talked into building yet another chicken coop and run. That will be AFTER the goat habitat is done!

Appleyards come in both standard and mini. We have the standard. They are quite large, with males being 9 lbs.

I've never.butchered pure Pekin (next year lol) it would be interesting to see the difference between the jumbo and standard. Lol I could be doing this for years. I've had Rouens but we mostly had them for fun. I'd like to get them again they were awesome moms and foraged really well.
My mom loves apple yards she's more into ducks for eggs. She been looking desperately for Campbell's from holdereads lines but hasn't had much luck. She's thinking a trip to the states might be needed next year. It definitely would be worth it between the two of us.

Appleyards sound neat too.
I'm in the same position Echo, I need another barn. There are lots I would like to try to work with.

It would be neat to have a section here for all the different types of poultry so people could share their experiences with each breed.
