Hi Everyone, I've got myself three sources for Buckeyes- hatching eggs from Les Farms in New Brunswick, Jeff Lay from Ohio  has agreed to get me some of his birds next year, and  Ethan Wiggins in Saskatchewan said he'd sell me some eggs next spring.
That way I'll have three strains and hopefully enough diversity for a healthy flock. Very Happy
One of Ethan's Buckeye cockerels  won  Reserve American at the Canadian National a few years back. He's kindly allowed me to post a picture of one of his cockerels:

That's great! Where in Sask. is Ethan Wiggans? Would love some hatching eggs myself and I am around the Yorkton area.

I am not sure of where exactly he is in Saskatchewan, but I got his email address from the American Buckeye Poultry Club website.

Duane Urch in Minnesota has some nice Buckeyes,, he ships to Canada. If memory is correct he has bred them since the late 1950 s.

Fabulous, Ethan is the Son of Mirycreek, here on this forum. His handle is Chantecler_eh? here. He has been working on the buckeyes for years, and that is the young man I was talking about that brought me hatching eggs of the breed, all the way from southwest Saskatchewan to Armstrong for the International Provincial exhibition (IPE) in the year of 2010. The eggs held carefully on his lap for the entire journey, smiling that big smile. With the three different lines of buckeyes, you will have lots of genetic diversity and this is wonderful. That picture of the buckeye rooster is a great example of what the breed should look like, and I am sure has become better as the years have progressed. Wise choice. They are beautiful, they are kind and they are smart. Take so well to confinement and LOVE to free range, such nosey and friendly birds. Good choice, and happy dancing for you! Have a beautiful day, CynthiaM.

Thanks, that's good to know that he ships to Canada- I had assumed he didn't because I though he'd be innundated with requests from Americans LOL .. I have heard of him, apparently he has a lot of breeds and they are good quality.

I am looking very forward to seeing the differences in the strains. My main goal is production but I still want to breed as close to the SOP as I can. I am a bit nervous anticipating the results of crosses between the strains. I have read that sometimes backfires- I am hoping though that it will ultimately benefit the birds.

Buckeyes are so friendly I find photos like that hard to get because they are usually dancing underfoot!

They can get incredibly long tail feathers in that fabulous green-black - but then they are torn off in all the busy free ranging.

Just some stuff for you to look at.  Here is one of the roosters and a hen that I had, not a great picture, looks like the hen is yapping at the rooster, but it looks nice.  Enjoy.  Have a most wonderful day, CynthiaM.

Thanks!~! More pics please Smile - they really are lovely chickens. Yours have that nice Nice red Irish Setter colour I like. I am surprised they don't sneak through the fence and take off into the alfalfa. Is the fence electric?

I have looked up some threads here on our forum, and link them for you about my buckeye experience and how I loved the breed. Lots of posts, I have only put a few on. The search on the forum is a bit clumbsy, but if if you go into the search, go to advanced search, type in buckeye and then type in CynthiaM there is a whole lot more threads, these are only a few. If you have time and desire, there is lots to read about the buckeyes, you will certainly enjoy the breed....have a most beautiful day, CynthiaM.

I grabbed a cup of coffee and read through your posts CynthiaM- Lots of very good information there for a new Buckeye owner!!! We'll be related (well sort of!!) when I get my buckeyes from Chantecler Eh next spring. I was intrigued to see the white mottling on the buckeye chicks- so cute!! I need to read up on incubators, I need to get one up and going and tested before I get my eggs. I'll check through the forum for incubator help. Thanks for posting the threads.

Glad you enjoyed them, do the search feature , Derbyshire, there is a few more posts that I made and there is good information in there too....others have posted ones too, the search is a powerful tool for finding things to learn about on forums as well. Remember that. Yes, the buckeyes don't get their full mahongany coloured feathers until they are about 4 months old, or so, can't quite remember, maybe 3 months. The males are very easy to distinguish about 4 weeks of age because of the comb and wattles, girls have basically no head gear. Nice you are doing your homework. Have a beautiful day, CynthiaM.

I checked out the buckeye threads- lots of good information and (YAY!!!) photos. I'll definitely keep an eye out for duck feet, too many black feathers and smut LOL.  I am intrigued by the Buckeye/ white chantecler crosses- I spend hours with the chicken calculator!!. If anyone has older birds of that cross please post.
It's good to see the variablity in the Buckeye breed and to know what to select for.  Most of the time people post their best birds so you never get a really good idea of what might show up..... Of course all the chicks I hatch will be perfect, perfect, perfect!!! cheers
