Disease Testing - Contact information

On several FaceBook poultry groups, there has been much talk about disease & its control. I know some here don't use FB and thought I would share the info here. Frankly, I am doing so because something struck a chord with me. One post said that a big problem is someone asks what do to about a sick bird and then the topic becomes over run with attacks on the opinions given that the question is lost. Many things have also changed since this forum and ACE began. Testing is available and we are finding out where. Hopefully a list can be compiled from each province where testing is available along with contact numbers and maybe even web site information.

In Alberta if you have a sick bird, testing is available for both hobby & backyard flocks. My understanding is the birds are tested for free if you can drop the birds off yourself. Otherwise you cost is simply in getting the birds there. Birds can be dropped off live or dead. If contacting for testing information, be sure to say it's for small flock information. I'm told that these offices also handle commerical opperations, so they will need to redirect you to the one that handles backyard flocks.

Also note: One of the key reasons for not wanting to make that call is the fear of maybe having your flock seized or euthasized. There has been a lot of change in reguard to this. In Alberta, some reportable disease now calls for its control via vaccination rather than flock euthanasia. I have heard this for both a flock in Alberta and in BC, as the disease though reportable is now considered acceptable to control via vaccination. Calling and talking to a vet will answer your questions and concerns.

Also been told that anyone wanting to get vaccines for ILT can do so by contacting any of the numbers below. They will sell and ship to anywhere in Alberta.

i know last year they would send vaccine from abbotsford out to alberta. wouldnt ship to sk though.

I think that this is a wonderful post, Toybarons. I also think that there is a terror in people when they think they might have illness in their flocks and don't know what to do. People get slammed about things like this when they bear their souls and tell that they might have an ill bird and what to do. The condemning I have seen is awful and it makes me wonder why even anyone would feel like admitting and asking for help. It is horrid. Anyways, this is nice to read, and nice to know that there can be help in different ways for anyone dealing with a sick bird.....I just remember back to the time in BC where thousands of birds were euthanized, thousands and thousands of dollars down the drain and the sorrow....oh the sorrow....the years and years where people had been working on their birds....lost, down the drain, sickening....I was just getting into the chickens seriously just after this horrid condemnation took place, can't remember the year, but it was a total devastation and should never have come down the way it did....sigh...I think maybe around 2004...or 2005, not sure, sigh.
